2010 season underway!

April 2nd, 2010 by petesblog

Despite cooler conditions than we hoped for at the start of the season fish have been caught, some on dries. Opening day saw Mo Graham return a 14 inch brown caught on a pheasant tailed nymph.

Salmon have been caught further downstream and despite the most recent spate none have been seen on the hotel waters as yet but they shouldn’t be far away.

The April edition of Trout and Salmon has an article by Devon fly fishing legend Mike Weaver visited during the mayfly last year. The highlight for me was the two of us both playing 12inch plus fish at the same time just a few feet apart!

A regular to our fishing school, Ian, had the first fish from one of our new beats and we hope there will be a lot more to come!

Fly Fishing in Devon 2010

February 5th, 2010 by petesblog

The fly fishing season in Devon is just around the corner now and it won’t be long until you are on the water casting to gently sipping trout!

The Devon School of Fly Fishing is able to provide fly fishing lessons, tuition as well as a fly fishing guide to show you the water.

Our guides are on the river all of the time and so are in touch with what is going on down to the timings of hatches and having the appropriate flies.

Tuition and guiding is available from £150 a day for one person which includes all fishing permits and loan of any gear and access to private water. Being located at a fishing hotel means it is simply a case of walking down to the river having had a good nights rest and some excellent food!

Fly Fishing School – Winter

October 15th, 2009 by petesblog

Now that the rivers of Devon are closed there is no need for us to shut the fly fishing school !

We are able to offer fly casting lessons on hourly, 1/2 day and full day options and having the school on the grounds of the Fox and Hounds Hotel means that it is easy to make your fly fishing lesson an overnight stop over with fine food and a wide range of non fishing activities on the hotel grounds there is even some beauty treatments for the non fisher in the Hotel’s beauty salon.

Our fly fishing courses take place on our private casting lake which means that there are no extra costs of having to buy a day ticket.  We have quality tackle from Orvis and an AAPGAI instructor on hand to ensure that you have the highest quality tuition available.

For the more experienced angler we are able to offer casting “tune ups” if you are heading to warmer climes in search of bonefish, tarpon or even permit.

We also offer guided fly fishing for pike and grayling in some great locations.

We can wax lyrical about our fly fishing school and are proud that we never ask for testimonials as we want to offer the very highest standard in tuition and guiding, be it your first visit or you are a seasoned guest. We were overjoyed to recieve an email from a regular visitor Richard who sent us this mail recently.

Dear Pete,

I would like to take this time, as my season comes to a close, to thank you for what has been the highlight of my summer. My anticipation and excitement were well founded from the beginnings in May to my recent visit during the Bank Holiday; it has been an awesome experience.

The website does exactly what it says on the tin!

Your professionalism, enthusiasm and passion for fly fishing are infectious and I can honestly say that I am hooked on river fly fishing for life.

What started as guiding with tuition turned into such an adventurous learning curve; and by putting into practice all you have taught and advised, I feel I have learnt so much in such a short space of time. Highlights of the year have been; the wonderful day on Dartmoor; that fantastic day on the Bray and my best fish of the year from ‘Beat 2’.

The Devon School of Fly Fishing experience for me has been one of total joy and satisfaction. To any would be river fly fishermen it is an experience I can whole heartedly recommend and one I will be embarking on next season.

Once again, a big thank you to you and the team at DSOFF and I look forward to seeing you next season at the Fox and Hounds Hotel.

Kindest regards

Richard from Hampshire

Orvis Endorsed Guide

July 23rd, 2009 by petesblog

I am extremely pleased to announce that I have been invited to join the Orvis Endorsed Guide Team. I am honoured to have been considered and was really happy to say “yes!” when asked. As a result the fly fishing school will now be exclusively using Orvis gear and I am already building a large collection of gear for guests to use free of charge including the range of Helios Fly Rods, Frequent Flyer Rods, Clearwater Rods and Battenkill Large Arbor and BBS reels. The Helios already seem to be going down well!

I feel that the tie up with Orvis is the next logical step for our little operation and they are a company I admire from a fishing and business perspective and fit in well with the ethos of our fly fishing school in making sure the customer is always looked after, no matter what.

I hope to work closely with Orvis on a wide range of projects more details of which soon so keep checking back for more details.

We are so lucky to be based at the Fox and Hounds with excellent facilities, top notch service, great hospitality, fair prices and stunning food. I know that I am biased but the awards are coming in, so I guess this must be what the industry thinks too!

Nick and Tara have just won best wedding location in Devon award for 2009 and also have been awarded an AA Rossette for the food too. This goes along with the 3 AA stars the hotel already holds.

I am often told by guests that when they were travelling to see us that they were expecting just a small pub with a few rooms, not a fully fledged country hotel with a warm, relaxed welcome and you know what?  The fishing is pretty good too!

Fly Fishing Holidays in Devon   Take a look at our fishing and accommodation packages where you are able to book your trip with just one phone call and sample excellent accommodation and then have your own private fishing beat for the day, we think this is one of the reasons we stand out from the crowd!

Am I in a group?

June 14th, 2009 by petesblog

We are often asked if I courses are run for a group or an individual.  The answer to this is that your fly fishing lesson or guiding will be on a one to one basis or with a friend or partner if they have booked too.  Our courses shown on the website are designed to give you an idea of the sort of fly fishing days we are able to offer but we tailor each course to your requirements and to match your experience so that you get the most out of your time with us and most of all enjoy yourself!

June 8th, 2009 by petesblog

Have you ever wanted to try your hand at connecting with a sea trout?  Now is a good time as they have entered our waters and we have a chance to connect with one. Being based where we are allows us to take a stroll down to the river to see where we will be fishing, discuss tactics and then wait for the sun to set in the comfortable surroundings of the hotel.

Available as a 1/2 day or by the hour option please contact us for more details.

Please note we will be fishing during the hours of darkness.
