Although the may fly hatch can’t be described as prolific as those seen on the famous fly fishing chalkstreams such as the Test and Itchen we do have a healthy hatch of mayfly in Devon too.
This might be surprising to some but to those that know being on the water at the right time can be a truely magical moment even for the most experienced of fly fishers. The numbers of fly in the hatch are not heavy but there are enough that the fish will key in on them and even the biggest and smartest of Devon trout will throw off their natural caution and slash at the large flies as they drift down the river.
We like to fish large flies with a large footprint in the waters surface and don’t be too afraid to beef up your tippet strength as sea trout are also partial to mayfly!
