We have already started to countdown to the new fly fishing season here in Devon. If you would like to try fly fishing for the first time, would like some fly fishing lessons or guided fly fishing then please contact us and we’ll show you a great day on the water.
As we enter the last month of the season we are looking forward to some great back end fly fishing in Devon. The rain has meant that the salmon are starting to enter the hotel beats which is great for the angler looking to try their luck.

Fly Fishing in Devon in September can be a great time to be on the water. The autumn salmon run will be under way and with low water for most of the season there are still plenty of fish looking to make the next stage of their journey. Trout fishing can be outstanding and with the evenings getting cooler the fish will feed throughout the day looking to pack on weight ahead of spawning.
If you are coming down to join us for some fly fishing in Devon we are really pleased to be able to take you on to our new trout lake. It is the perfect venue for you to be able learn to fly fish and we have thrown in a few trout too just to make it interesting!
We run beginners fly fishing courses on 1/2 and full day options and being based at a fishing hotel we are ideally placed for all of your fly fishing adventures.
Despite having miles of water for you to explore when you visit us at The Devon School of Fly Fishing we are always looking to offer something new and exciting for the fly fisher.
One option that has grown in popularity over the last few years is fly fishing for bass. Being located on the main road from Exeter to Barnstaple means that it is only a short drive from our base at the Fox and Hounds before you are casting your fly in salt water.

Despite cooler conditions than we hoped for at the start of the season fish have been caught, some on dries. Opening day saw Mo Graham return a 14 inch brown caught on a pheasant tailed nymph.
Salmon have been caught further downstream and despite the most recent spate none have been seen on the hotel waters as yet but they shouldn’t be far away.
The April edition of Trout and Salmon has an article by Devon fly fishing legend Mike Weaver visited during the mayfly last year. The highlight for me was the two of us both playing 12inch plus fish at the same time just a few feet apart!
A regular to our fishing school, Ian, had the first fish from one of our new beats and we hope there will be a lot more to come!
The fly fishing season in Devon is just around the corner now and it won’t be long until you are on the water casting to gently sipping trout!
The Devon School of Fly Fishing is able to provide fly fishing lessons, tuition as well as a fly fishing guide to show you the water.
Our guides are on the river all of the time and so are in touch with what is going on down to the timings of hatches and having the appropriate flies.
Tuition and guiding is available from £150 a day for one person which includes all fishing permits and loan of any gear and access to private water. Being located at a fishing hotel means it is simply a case of walking down to the river having had a good nights rest and some excellent food!
