Welcome To The Devon School Of Fly Fishing

All of our fly fishing courses take place at our HQ at the Fox and Hounds Hotel but it is not necessary to be a resident of the hotel for you to take either fly fishing tuition or guiding from the Devon School of Fly Fishing.

We have a private lake stocked with hard fighting trout and over 5 miles of the famous River Taw where we are able to show you how to catch trout, sea trout and salmon. With the coast just a short drive away we are ideally placed for salt water fly fishing locations and for something completely different, fly fishing for pike or carp can easily be arranged at nearby locations.

We believe in providing the best service possible and will always go that extra mile to ensure you learn lots but also that you enjoy yourself!

All of our team are AAPGAI qualified to the highest standards but also understand the need to teach you in an easy to understand and jargon-free manner. Most of all though, we are fly fishermen and if we are not out teaching or guiding we are out on the water ourselves!

We are able to offer a wide selection of courses and also hourly fly fishing lessons. So if you are just in need of a quick “tune up” we are on hand to help!

Being based at the Fox and Hounds Hotel means that we are able to offer the complete fishing break or holiday under one roof. If you are travelling from further a field we are able to organise your fishing and accommodation in one simple phone call, saving you the need to hunt around for somewhere to stay. You can rest assured that Nick and Tara will ensure that you enjoy your stay in wonderful rooms and excellent food!

Beginners Fly Fishing Course

Ever wanted to try fly fishing? We’ll show you how! Come down to our private lake and learn about how the tackle works, knots, basic entomology and how to cast. You then put this in to practice and see if you can tempt one of our trout with a fly. Now that you can cast why not add on another day and let us teach you how to fish a river too!

Guided Fly Fishing

A day on the river with one of our full time guides. Stroll down to the river and let our guides pass on all their tips from fly selection and set up to the cast you’ll need to land your dry fly in a back eddy to tempt that big fish. We get just as excited as you when you hook him!

Fly Fishing on Dartmoor

A really popular course for the more experienced river fly fisherman. We’ll take you up into Dartmoor and fish some of the tiny streams that we will find. Sometimes just a rod length across but if you are stealthy enough and get your fly into the right spot you might just be surprised. Make that cast and hold your breath!

Please note- there is an element of walking involved on this course.

Sea Trout Fishing

Imagine heading off as darkness falls and strolling down to the river in search of sea trout. There are few more exciting moments when your line suddenly goes tight and a sea trout takes to the air! If this is your first time we will show you the casts and techniques needed and then we will walk the beat during daylight and discuss how we will approach the pools and then meet up later and put it all into practice. Best time for this course is June to August.

Please note you will be fishing at night time.

For the more experienced sea trouter hourly guiding is available at £30 per hour.

Salmon Fishing

Ever wanted to go in search of salmon? This guided day will allow us to show you our favourite pools on the hotel’s stretches of the River Taw where Salmo Salar might be holding. Being on the river all of the time will allow us to keep you fully in touch with how the river is fishing for migratory fish.

Reservoir Trout Fishing

If this is your first time heading out on a larger water we’ll be happy to show you the tips and techniques required for fishing from the bank or a boat. We will head to Kennick Reservoir set in the very heart of Dartmoor. At 50 acres this is the perfect size to make the first steps on a larger water whilst not feeling too intimidating.

An ever growing number of fly fishers are heading to the coast in search of bass. We are some of them and just love it and are happy to take you to some of our favourite locations on the coast for you to try your hand.

Fly Fishing for Pike

We are lucky to have an in house pike expert in Mark who is an innovative pike fisherman and fly tyer who has caught more large pike than most of us can dream of! Join him at some of his favourite locations and pick the brains of a master.

Fly Casting Improver to Advanced

Are you looking to improve your distance casting or want to learn how to Spey cast ahead of the salmon season? Or perhaps you want to learn some useful casts for the river. Our full time AAPGAI instructors are on hand to show you how and will ensure that you learn lots but in an easy to understand manner. Why not select ½ of tuition and ½ day of guided fishing?!

All of our prices include fishing permits and the use of any equipment you might need. The hotel is able to provide a packed lunch for guests of the fishing school at extra cost if needed and please remember you will need an up to date fishing licence. These can be bought on line from the Environment Agency.
