Two fishing students and their fish

Thank you so much for such a wonderful day on Thursday - I very much enjoyed it and will certainly be back to the West Country soon...

Teaching pitching from the river port

Just a few lines to thank you for the brilliant day on Friday.  We both enjoyed the day immensely and look forward to our next trip.

Caught his first fish

A really marvellous day’s fishing!  Over and above the things I have learnt is the real pleasure of talking through the fish and sharing the pleasure of those awkward takes.

Fly Fishing in Devon in September

August 19th, 2010 by petesblog

Fly Fishing in Devon in September can be a great time to be on the water. The autumn salmon run will be under way and with low water for most of the season there are still plenty of fish looking to make the next stage of their journey. Trout fishing can be outstanding and with the evenings getting cooler the fish will feed throughout the day looking to pack on weight ahead of spawning.

Fly fishing in Devon is really starting to warm up and the fish are rising!

Mayfly are hatching and the fish are showing an interest in them which is great news for the fish but also us anglers as normally spooky, large trout throw off their inhibitions and hit a well presented pattern.

We are also starting to see sea trout on the hotel water which is great news for nocturnal anglers!

For the latest news on hatches please feel free to contact us.

Fly Fishing in Devon

April 29th, 2010 by petesblog

Fly Fishing in Devon has really got under way after the long cold winter so if you fancy learning how to get your fly to that rising fish or would like a fly fishing guide we are able to help!

If you are new to fly fishing join us and learn the art of casting a fly to a trout. We are able to offer fly fishing tuition to all levels from newcomers to the very experienced.

The Devon School of Fly Fishing operates on over 7 miles of the river Taw and some of it’s tributaries. Your guide has an intimate knowledge of the water and what is going on taking the guess work out of your day. Being based at the Fox and Hounds means we are able to offer accommodation and fishing in a beautiful setting.

2010 season underway!

April 2nd, 2010 by petesblog

Despite cooler conditions than we hoped for at the start of the season fish have been caught, some on dries. Opening day saw Mo Graham return a 14 inch brown caught on a pheasant tailed nymph.

Salmon have been caught further downstream and despite the most recent spate none have been seen on the hotel waters as yet but they shouldn’t be far away.

The April edition of Trout and Salmon has an article by Devon fly fishing legend Mike Weaver visited during the mayfly last year. The highlight for me was the two of us both playing 12inch plus fish at the same time just a few feet apart!

A regular to our fishing school, Ian, had the first fish from one of our new beats and we hope there will be a lot more to come!

Fly Fishing School – Winter

October 15th, 2009 by petesblog

Now that the rivers of Devon are closed there is no need for us to shut the fly fishing school !

We are able to offer fly casting lessons on hourly, 1/2 day and full day options and having the school on the grounds of the Fox and Hounds Hotel means that it is easy to make your fly fishing lesson an overnight stop over with fine food and a wide range of non fishing activities on the hotel grounds there is even some beauty treatments for the non fisher in the Hotel’s beauty salon.

Our fly fishing courses take place on our private casting lake which means that there are no extra costs of having to buy a day ticket.  We have quality tackle from Orvis and an AAPGAI instructor on hand to ensure that you have the highest quality tuition available.

For the more experienced angler we are able to offer casting “tune ups” if you are heading to warmer climes in search of bonefish, tarpon or even permit.

We can wax lyrical about our fly fishing school and are proud that we never ask for testimonials as we want to offer the very highest standard in tuition and guiding, be it your first visit or you are a seasoned guest. We were overjoyed to recieve an email from a regular visitor Richard who sent us this mail recently.

Dear Pete,

I would like to take this time, as my season comes to a close, to thank you for what has been the highlight of my summer. My anticipation and excitement were well founded from the beginnings in May to my recent visit during the Bank Holiday; it has been an awesome experience.

The website does exactly what it says on the tin!

Your professionalism, enthusiasm and passion for fly fishing are infectious and I can honestly say that I am hooked on river fly fishing for life.

What started as guiding with tuition turned into such an adventurous learning curve; and by putting into practice all you have taught and advised, I feel I have learnt so much in such a short space of time. Highlights of the year have been; the wonderful day on Dartmoor; that fantastic day on the Bray and my best fish of the year from ‘Beat 2’.

The Devon School of Fly Fishing experience for me has been one of total joy and satisfaction. To any would be river fly fishermen it is an experience I can whole heartedly recommend and one I will be embarking on next season.

Once again, a big thank you to you and the team at DSOFF and I look forward to seeing you next season at the Fox and Hounds Hotel.

Kindest regards

Richard from Hampshire
